In the seventeenth episode of How to Run a Law Firm in 2025, Mathew Kerbis and I talked all about one of the most underrated tools for solo and small firm success—standard operating procedures or SOPs.
I’ll be honest: we both initially resisted creating SOPs. They can feel tedious and time-consuming when you’re just trying to keep up with your caseload. But we make the case for why SOPs are actually essential if you want to streamline your operations, build in automation, and reclaim your time.
We shared the tools we use to document and implement our SOPs and how each one plays a different role in helping us stay organized and consistent. Mathew gave specific examples from his own practice, including client intake and refund processes, while I talked about how writing things down has helped me spot opportunities for automation I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
Whether it’s managing client work or the business side of your practice, having efficient systems in place is what allows you to serve well and protect your work-life balance. This episode is all about how to make that happen.
